I have a wireless home network but I am trying to connect the desktop by way of ethernet cable through one of those PlugLink ethernet adapters since the desktop doesn't have a wireless access card and I had the adapter laying around.Next

I must say however that winsock corruption is not the only cause that results in a 169. Trying to set up a new connection should reveal such. This is a last resort step because it will erase all the wireless settings for your router. What I surmised by noticing the behavior of what was going on was that there must be some sort of software that is somehow blocking the connection. Secondly, if you are connecting via WiFi, make sure that it is turned on if you are using a laptop. After reading this article I am going to try winsock xp fix as suggested. I hadn't used my Dell laptop for a few months and recently when I tried to connect to my D-Link router connected to cable modem I could not get the internet. Are the wireless adapters in your other computers wireless-N? Now locate the downloaded Intel Ethernet adapter installer and install it when unsure, just go with the default selection of the installer. My partner is able to connect perfectly wirelessly with her Mac with no problems, and in our previous apartment I could connect to the Airport Express with no difficulty we had Comcast cable internet at the previous place.

I have another computer on the network, the one I'm using at the moment, and all the cables, router, etc. Look at the drivers list and the provider - which should not show Microsoft as their drivers often cause trouble. Fortunately there is a small program that has been going around the web for some time. Another tip is to install a newer version of Internet Explorer, but I can't provide a download link. If nothing on your computer connects to the Internet, but another computer on the same network can connect, that would be a computer related issue. Really don't know where to start on trying to fix it so I can just access the internet on it it's ethernet only. That means if I upgrade, some hardware may not work with that operating system. Try Network Troubleshooter If nothing has worked as of yet, try to use the network troubleshooter in Windows. When it starts back up, again open command prompt as administrator.
